About

Bold Match Journal is an independent football publication for readers who want to understand how a match takes shape. It explains tactics and team patterns without assuming a coaching background or asking you to pick a side.

What we cover

Our subjects include team shape, player roles, attacking and defensive choices, and the transitions between phases of play. A piece might follow one kind of movement, explain a tactical term or show how a decision changes the space around it.

Who it is for

The publication is for curious football readers: people new to watching the game as well as long-time followers who want clearer language for what they see. We aim to make ideas understandable without flattening the game into a formula.

How we approach the game

We begin with a specific question and explain the relevant idea in plain English. Football varies by team, opponent and moment, so we avoid presenting one formation or tactic as a universal answer. Our aim is to help readers observe more, not tell clubs or players what to do.
